BMW 90th anniversary with one-off retro concept bike

Late last year, we said that BMW Motorrad was working on a special air-cooled motorcycle to help commemorate the German company’s 90th anniversary of making motorbikes. Well, today we get to see what zie Germans have been up to, and it is called the BMW Concept Ninety.

Taking its cues from the BMW R90S, which itself turns 40-years-old today, the BMW Concept Ninety is debuting at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and was designed by America’s own Roland Sands Design and the BMW Motorrad design team.

“The BMW R 90 S hails from an era in which bikers were regarded as outlaws,” said Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design, in the company’s press release. “There was something rebellious about it – it was fast, loud and wild. Pure emotion. And it has retained its fascination to this day.”

BMW and Roland Sands have put some serious work into this project; the bodywork is hand crafted from aluminium, brushed areas can be seen in the tinted areas of the front fairing and tank, as well as at the tail. The colour scheme of the BMW Concept Ninety is a nod to the legendary Daytona Orange paintwork of the BMW R 90 S.

There are modern touches, like LED elements inside the headlamp design, but this is a bare-bones `Boxer’ machine. Painted in black with contrast details, the motor features milled mechanical components like engine covers, custom clip-ons, wheels and a one-off exhaust.

Special attention was given to the front cover of the boxer engine and the valve covers which were meticulously milled and the same treatment was given to the exhaust also. The parts were milled using a contrast cut technique which has been helpful in giving the parts an alluring contrast with respect to the black mechanical components. Sadly though BMW has no plans to produce this piece of art on two-wheels, so all you classic sportsbike fans have to be content just watching the Concept Ninety on your screens or later at the BMW museum.
